Israeli civilian Yuval Castleman was allegedly shot by an Israeli army reservist who is thought to have mistaken him for an attacker.

A heroic Israeli who ran towards two Palestinian gunmen as they opened fire on a Jerusalem bus stop has been pictured just moments before.

Yuval Castleman was shot by an Israel army reservist during the attack and could be seen just moments before holding his hands in the air.

Then, two gunshots can be heard.

More footage shows the moment that the two Hamas gunmen jumped out of their vehicle to shoot rounds at unsuspecting, innocent civilians at the bus stop. Three people at the bus stop were killed.

Mr Castelman was then seen running across the road to try and stop the gunmen from getting away, firing at them with his pistol.

Then, an Israeli reservist is seen opening fire on Mr Castelman. It is believed that it was these rounds that ultimately killed the former police officer.

Friends and relatives of Mr Castelman gathered on Monday to pay their respects to Mr Castelman.

A friend of his, Guy Itzkovich, told CNN: "He saw the attack, and he just stopped his car, got out of his car, took his gun out, and he just charged at the terrorists and he killed them both.

"When the soldiers saw him I’m assuming they thought he was a terrorist. But then when Yuval realized that that’s what they’re thinking, he opened his jacket to show he had nothing underneath and got down on his knees. He opened his hands, so they could see he had nothing in his hands.

"He was shouting in Hebrew. He was shouting ‘I’m an Israeli.’ He threw his wallet, his identification, on the way so they could see he’s an Israeli."

Mr Castelman's father, Moshe, told CNN: “Yuval did what he was expected to do because all his life he was that sort of person. He was trained in the security environment and he did what was requested of him because it’s decreed that we have to help one another.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also called for an inquiry into the incident while also defending the right for Israeli citizens to bear arms.

He said: “We know that during upticks of terror over the past decade, and even before that, having armed civilians often saved lives and prevented a bigger catastrophe.

“Under the current circumstances, we should continue with this policy, I surely support it. We might have to pay prices, but that’s life.”
