Missy Elliott makes history as first female rap artist in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Missy Elliott has shared how her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction seemed out of reach throughout her career.

Missy Elliott has been delighting fans for three decades in her career as a hip-hop superstar, but she is about to make history in a way she never has before.

Elliott, 52, is about to become the first female rap artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Work It artist is receiving the honor as a 2023 inductee along with several other artists.

Among the other honorees are other legendary musicians.

They include Kate Bush, Rage Against the Machine, Sheryl Crow, The Spinners and Willie Nelson.

Also being honored posthumously is George Michael.

In an interview with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, Elliott, who has been known as Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott throughout her career, shared she didn’t expect to receive the honor.

“Words cannot describe,” she said. “It just hasn’t clicked. When you’re in the hip-hop world, it seems so far out of reach.”

She also noted her being the first and, so far, only, female hip-hop artist, to be inducted coincided with another major milestone.

“And it being the 50th year of hip-hop is something special and unique,” she said when Roberts asked her how she felt about being the first female rapper to be inducted.

Throughout her career, Elliott has won four Grammy Awards, eight MTV Video Music Awards, two American Music Awards, six BET Awards and a Billboard Women in Music award.

She also made history in 2019 as the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
