The 80-year-old Democrat's visit to Boston comes as he falls behind in key battleground states as the race for the White House heats up.

US President Joe Biden looked "distraught" as he arrived in Boston for fundraisers ahead of his 2024 election campaign.

Singer-songwriter James Taylor is featured as the “special guest” at one of those fundraisers scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Shubert Theatre in downtown Boston.

Mr Biden touched down at Joint Base Andrews before departing at 10:26am. He spoke to Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu as he walked onto the tarmac.

Body language expert Judi James tells Daily Express US that the President seemed "slightly distraught-looking" as he arrived in Boston.

She said: "His chest looks puffed although this puffed, splayed look could be down to a protective vest rather than any alpha pretensions.

"His expression becomes slightly distraught-looking at one point, with his brows puckering into a steeple as his jaw drops open but the sight of his hosts unleashes a series of affectionate and quite intimately friendly-looking exchanges."

She added: "Biden looks cheery and upbeat to be in Boston, stepping through the plane door clutching his phone in one hand like a teenager before descending the steps in a rather more assured and confident way than usual, looking up and throwing a wave in a combination ritual as he does so.

"His eyes narrow and crinkle and his cheeks round in an authentic smile and the way he raises his brows in a shrug and Healy pats him on the bicep suggests she’s offering a gesture of sympathy or empathy to Biden for something he has told her.

"This is a tactile chat. Biden touches Healey on the arm as they speak and he puts an arm around Mayor Wu, with his hand on her back. He looks keen to have a long and friendly chat with the two women, getting closer as he talks, closing in on the mayor with a wide grin as she turns her head away."

Biden's visit to Boston comes amid a polling nightmare for the Democrats.

Polling by The New York Times and Siena College from November showed that President Biden is trailing former President Donald Trump, his likely opponent in 2024, in five of the six most important battleground states.
